Questions we get before the tour starts

Thirteen questions, asked often enough by guests that we pulled them into their own page. If your question isn't here, call (808) 646-5028 or email info@ohanatours.com — someone answers within a day.

How far in advance should I book?

Two to three weeks out is a safe bet year-round. December-March and June-August peak seasons go first — plan four to six weeks. Private tours in peak season can book out two months.

What's the difference between a private tour and a regular tour?

A regular Circle Island Tour is a shared van ($245 per person, up to 14 total). A private tour is the whole van for your group only ($3,200 flat). Same owner-guide, same 10-hour day. Private is better math for groups of 6+.

What is your cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. Inside 24 hours we may charge a fee. If weather makes a stop unsafe we reroute or refund in full. We don't cancel for light rain.

How long are the tours and what time do they start?

About 10 hours door-to-door. Pickup is 7:00-7:15 am from Waikoloa and 8:00-8:15 am from Kona. Your guide confirms the exact time the night before.

Are your tours suitable for children?

Yes. Kids ride at regular adult price. Most love the volcano steam vents and black sand beach; the 10-hour length is the real question. Ages 6+ typically do great.

Are your vans wheelchair accessible?

Our vans aren't fully wheelchair-accessible, but we've run tours for guests who can transfer with some help. Email info@ohanatours.com before booking to discuss.

How much walking is involved?

Moderate. Most stops are 15-30 minutes of walking, mostly paved, some uneven volcanic rock at Volcanoes National Park. Tell us if mobility is a concern.

What should I bring on the tour?

Sunscreen, a hat, walking shoes, a light jacket for Volcanoes National Park, a phone or camera, and $20-30 for lunch. We carry water and Hawaiian snacks on the van.

Do you provide hotel pickup and drop-off?

Yes, included. Kona hotels pickup 8:00-8:15 am. Waikoloa hotels pickup 7:00-7:15 am. If your Airbnb isn't in those corridors, tell us when you book.

Are meals included in the tour?

Lunch is on you — about $20-30 at a local Hilo restaurant we trust. Bottled water, Hawaiian snacks, and sometimes fresh malasadas or Kona coffee come with the tour.

What happens if it rains or there's bad weather?

The Big Island has five climate zones; light-to-moderate rain is part of the trip, not a cancellation. Severe weather triggers a reroute, reschedule, or full refund.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Tell us about allergies and dietary needs when you book. We handle on-van snacks directly. For strict vegan, celiac, or severe allergies we pre-coordinate the Hilo lunch stop.

What type of vehicle do you use?

A 14-seat Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Captain's chairs, A/C, tall ceiling, big windows. Cleaned between every tour.
